Such a process happens within the cells of living organisms, including plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria. Cellular respiration can be projected by the following equation:

C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2 (oxygen) → 6CO2 (carbon dioxide) + 6H2O (water) + Energy (in the form of ATP)

Role of Oxygen in Cellular Respiration: Energy Production:

Cellular respiration is a series of biochemical reactions that occur in the mitochondria of cells. This process generates energy to carry out various functions and activities. Glucose, which serves as the primary source of energy is derived from the food we eat. During the process, glucose molecules are broken down in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is known as the energy currency of the cell. Oxygen is crucial for this process because it finally accepts the electron in the electron transport chain, which facilitates the production of ATP through oxidative phosphorylation.

Role of Oxygen in Cellular Respiration: Aerobic Respiration:

Cellular respiration can be of two types such as aerobic or anaerobic, depending on the presence or absence of oxygen. In aerobic respiration, oxygen is the key element and is the most efficient way to produce energy. It produces a much higher amount of ATP compared to anaerobic respiration. It approximately yields 36-38 molecules of ATP per molecule of glucose. In the absence of oxygen, cells resort to anaerobic respiration, which is less efficient and produces lactic acid or ethanol as byproducts.

Role of Oxygen in Cellular Respiration: Maintenance of Metabolism:

Oxygen is crucial for maintaining the metabolic activities of cells including biosynthesis, protein synthesis, and the regulation of cellular signaling pathways. Cellular metabolism would be impaired, if adequate oxygen is not supplied leading to a buildup of metabolic waste products and ultimately cell dysfunction or death.

We inhale oxygen for our survival. It is obtained from the atmosphere through the process of breathing or respiration. Inhaling oxygen-rich air allows oxygen to diffuse into the bloodstream through the lungs. The lungs are the place where it binds to hemoglobin molecules in red blood (hemoglobin resides within red blood cells) cells for transport to tissues throughout the body. Oxygen is then released from hemoglobin(HB) and diffuses into cells, where it participates in cellular respiration. This ensures that cells have a constant supply of oxygen necessary for cellular respiration.

Role in Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Defense:

Oxygen is involved in various biochemical reactions within cells, including those that generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) as byproducts. ROS, such as superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide, can cause damage to cellular components if their levels are not properly regulated. Cells have antioxidant defense mechanisms, including enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase, as well as non-enzymatic antioxidants like glutathione and vitamins C and E, to neutralize ROS and prevent oxidative damage.
